A STUDY OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE TESTES OF THE PROTOCHORDATE, BRANCHIOSTOMA LANCEOLATUM BY USING THE LIGHT AND ELECTRON MICROSCOPES

Abstract
The structure of the ripe testes of the Protochordate Branchiostoma lanceolatum was described by the use of both the light and electron microscopes. The boundary tissue of the testis consists of a double layer of myoepithelial cells. Beneath this double layer a haemal space is found; this is filled with blood plasma and sandwiched by basal laminae. Beneath this basal lamina, germinal and non-germinal cells are found. The non-germinal cells are not abundant, and the germinal epithelium is made up of spermatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa.
